William Benoist, a Cheyenne River Sioux student at the Hampton Institute in Virginia, is also referred to in records as "Howaste." How does the name Howaste translate into English?

It would be good to see the whole page. Can you post it here please? If this is a Dakota name, the "r" may have been the phonetic equivalent of the Dakota "h" which was commonly used. However, there is no "f" in the Dakota alphabet. I wonder if this "f' is actually the double "s" which used to be written to look like an "f"? We'd need to see the page to compare the other letters in other names.
